Why sleep in a standard double bed if you are over 6ft tall?

What is “tall” these days anyway?

Why is 6ft or 7ft considered to be a big bed? Many beds and mattresses in America are often found to be 7ft Long. So, with thanks to our brilliant factories we are able to offer a range of wider and longer mattresses to choose from. Why is it that bigger people or taller people can’t find what they are looking for?

It is a known fact that the average height of both men and women in the UK has been increasing for many many years. Ever gone on a tour of an ancient castle and wondered why the doorways are so low? People used to be shorter! We often hear people joking about the fact that “they are putting something in he water” when we see teenagers towering above us but the simple fact is that to be over a good few inches over 6′ tall these days is more and more common. Experts have estimated that the average height rises by approximately 0.75″ each generation. This means that the height of the average male could be 6′ within the next 50 years or so. This, in turn, has implications for retailers and manufacturers of everything from beds to shoes. Consumers have already begun to demand more consideration when it comes to tailoring clothes, manufacturing furniture and standardising bed and mattress sizes.

At the moment, a standard single, three quarter or double mattress is just 6’3″ long – or 190cm. It is fair to assume that most people we don’t lie in bed with their heads right against the headend of a bed, this means that anyone over, say, 5’9 may find a standard double too short. It’s recommended that you buy a bed and mattress that is 6″ or 15cm longer than the tallest person sleeping in it. If you’re 6’4″ – not an uncommon height today – you’ll need a bed that’s 6’10” long or have to put up with the fact that your feet are going to get cold because they are sticking out under the bed clothes as they hang out of the end of the bed

Whilst we can get beds custom-made for you very quickly- if you’re extremely tall you may find that a superking size bed will work for you. Many of our ranges are available in superking size, which is usually 6′ wide by 6’6″ long. With a good mattress, tall people should be able to get a good night’s sleep in a superking bed – particularly as many people tend to sleep in a curled up position. A superking bed gives you both the length and the width you need to be supported and comfortable at night. Imagine not having to gently push your partner back across the bed as you try in vain to claim your share of the bed!

We plan to keep in stock for same day delivery such sizes as 3′ by 6’6″, 3′ by 6’9″, 3’6″ by 6’6″ then the larger sizes such as 7′ by 7′ and even 7’3″ and 7’6″ long beds. Until then any specially ordered size mattress or bed can normally be delivered within 7-21 days depending on the specification
