The Heli-Beds guide to buying a replacement sofabed mattress

A sofa bed mattress is thinner than a normal bed mattress and designed to fold inside the sofa mechanism, providing a compact sleeping solution for guests. The best choice depends on your usage frequency, preferred comfort, and the size and type of your sofa bed.

Types of sofa bed mattresses
Memory foam:
Our Memory Foam models mould to the body for a pressure-relieving sleep surface. We use a higher-density, open-cell to breathe better. Check out our Memory Foam sofa bed mattresses with blue gel technology which helps to cool the body.

Reflex foam:
Provides a more supportive feel than memory foam without the heat-retention issues. It's constructed with "bubble-like" cells that bounce back quickly when pressure is removed.

Pocket sprung:
Features individually wrapped springs that move independently, offering excellent support and minimal motion transfer. This is a higher-end option and great for those guests who are more used to a spring mattress rather than foam.

Open coil (or standard sprung):
A more budget-friendly option with interconnected springs. It provides a medium to softer feel.

Key considerations when choosing a replacement sofabed mattress
Usage frequency:
Sofabed mattresses are designed for occasional and guest use.  If you or a guest will be sleeping on it more frequently, invest in a higher-quality memory foam or pocket-sprung mattress.

Thickness and fit:
A mattress that is too thick will damage the folding mechanism of your sofa bed and won’t fold easily.

Measure carefully:
Roll out your sofa bed and measure the length, width, and depth of your old mattress. If you don’t have the old mattress, then measure the inside of the frame in which the mattress would be laying on.

Mattress thickness:
Most sofa beds use a mattress between 5-7cm thick (typically used on a 3 fold mechanism (click here to view).

Other thicker mattresses are 10-12cm thick (typically used on a 2 fold mechanism (click here to view).

If you have a futon frame, then these mattresses described above will not be suitable, you need to look for a futon mattress for your futon frame.

Comfort and support:
Firmness:
Look for medium firmness, which can accommodate most types of sleepers. Memory foam offers a medium – Firmer contouring feel, while spring mattresses provide a softer sleeping surface.

Material:
Breathability: Memory foam can trap heat. If you sleep hot, consider a gel-infused foam or a sprung mattress for better airflow.

Hypoallergenic:
Memory foam are a good option if you have allergies.
