A mattress topper can change the feel of a bed without replacing the mattress underneath. It is particularly useful when the existing mattress is supportive and in good condition but feels a little too firm.
What a topper can—and cannot—do
A topper adds a new comfort layer. Depending on its material and depth, it can soften surface pressure and create a more cushioned feel. It cannot repair a mattress with broken springs, deep hollows, a damaged edge or a base that no longer supports it evenly.
Before choosing a topper
Check the exact width and length of the mattress.
Decide whether you want a noticeably softer feel or only a small adjustment.
Allow for the added height when choosing fitted sheets.
Make sure the underlying mattress is dry, clean and structurally sound.
Check care instructions and whether the cover can be removed.
Foam types and feel
Reflex foam generally creates an even, supportive surface. Memory foam responds more closely to heat and pressure and gives a slower, contouring feel. Neither is automatically better—the right choice depends on whether you prefer easier movement or a more enveloping surface.
