How to choose the right replacement sofa bed mattress
Start by opening your sofa bed and measuring the width, length and thickness of the existing mattress. A difference of 1–2cm in width is usually manageable, but the fold pattern and mattress depth must suit the mechanism.
If you don't have the mattress, then measure to the edge of the bed frame
Measure the mattress itself rather than relying only on a Single, Double or King size name.
Check whether the mechanism folds the mattress once or twice.
Match the replacement mattress thickness as closely as possible.
Two-fold or three-fold mechanism?
Two-fold sofa beds
A two-fold mechanism folds the mattress almost in half before lowering it into the sofa. Some mechanisms then tuck a small part of it up and behind the back of the sofa. These mechanisms typically use a sprung or thicker foam mattress around 10–12cm deep. Shop two-fold sofa bed mattresses.
Three-fold sofa beds
A three-fold mechanism folds the mattress twice into thirds. It usually requires a thinner and more flexible foam mattress around 5–8cm deep. Shop three-fold sofa bed mattresses.
Foam, memory foam or sprung?
Foam mattresses are flexible and well suited to compact three-fold mechanisms. Memory foam adds pressure-relieving comfort, while sprung and pocket-sprung mattresses provide a more traditional feel where the mechanism allows the extra depth.
