A worn sofa-bed mattress can make an otherwise sound sofa uncomfortable. Replacing it is often straightforward, but the mattress must suit the mechanism as well as the sleeping area.
Measure the mattress—not the sofa
Open the mechanism fully and measure the existing mattress in centimetres. Record its width, length and depth. Do not rely on labels such as double or king: sofa-bed mechanisms commonly use sizes that differ from standard bed mattresses.
Check the fold pattern
Identify whether the mechanism folds in two or three sections. The replacement mattress must flex in the correct places and must not be so deep that the frame cannot close safely.
Choosing the construction
Foam replacements are light and flexible. Sprung options can provide a more familiar mattress feel but must be specifically designed for a folding mechanism. The best choice depends on available depth, how frequently the bed is used and the comfort level you want.
